Nearest airport
SFO lies 21 km south of the centre and is connected to the city by the free AirTrain to the BART station at the international terminal, then by the yellow line: the journey to Powell Street takes about thirty minutes and costs 11.80 USD in 2026, after the 6.2% increase applied on 1 January, with a train every fifteen to twenty minutes from 5am to around midnight. Taxis run on the meter rather than a flat fare: 4.15 USD to start, 0.65 USD per fifth of a mile, plus a 6 USD pick-up surcharge at SFO, which puts a trip to the centre at between 60 and 80 USD before tip for 25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Uber and Lyft pick up on the upper levels of the terminal car parks, at comparable but highly variable rates at peak times. Oakland (OAK) is a credible alternative: the AirBART shuttle to Coliseum station, then a connection to San Francisco, or 13.45 USD and about 45 minutes to Powell Street. San Jose (SJC), 75 km to the south, means one to one and a half hours' drive. Renting a car for a stay in the city is not advisable: central hotels charge 60 to 85 USD a night for valet parking, street parking is regulated and paid for almost everywhere, and vehicle break-ins, although sharply down, remain concentrated on rental cars near tourist sites. To reach Sausalito by car, allow about fifteen kilometres from Union Square via the Golden Gate Bridge, or 20 to 30 minutes outside peak hours; the toll is collected southbound only, cannot be paid in cash and amounts to 10.25 USD with a FasTrak tag or 11.25 USD billed by licence plate. The Golden Gate Ferry links the Ferry Building to Sausalito in about thirty minutes for 14 USD, or 9.50 USD with a Clipper card, with seven departures each way on weekdays and five at the weekend. From the Sausalito ferry landing, Cavallo Point Lodge runs a free shuttle from Wednesday to Sunday; on other days, allow for a taxi or a ride-hailing car for the remaining three kilometres to Fort Baker.

Seven neighbourhoods account for most of San Francisco's hotels, and the choice involves far more than price. Union Square remains the logistical base: the Powell Street BART station serves the airport directly, and the two Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde cable car lines leave from Powell and Market, at 9 USD for a single ride against 2.85 USD for an ordinary Muni ticket paid with a Clipper card. Nob Hill, just to the north, rises to a little over 100 metres: the hotels there are quieter, but the six hundred metres separating the hill from Union Square are uphill, and some neighbouring streets exceed a 25% gradient, with Filbert Street reaching 31.5% between Hyde and Leavenworth. Mid-Market and Civic Center, where the San Francisco Proper Hotel stands, offer the best transport links in the city, BART and Muni Metro combined under Market Street, and the lowest rates in the centre, for reasons set out below. SoMa, south of Market, is flat and dominated by offices and convention centres: convenient for Moscone Center and Oracle Park, very quiet in the evening. North Beach and the Marina have no metro station and depend on bus routes 30, 43 and 45, which means 25 to 35 minutes to reach the centre. The Mission, served by the 16th Street and 24th Street BART stations, is flat, the sunniest part of the city and the best supplied with restaurants, but hotels there are scarce. Finally the other shore: Cavallo Point Lodge, at Fort Baker, sits at the northern foot of the Golden Gate, thirty minutes by ferry from the Ferry Building, which means organising every journey around fixed timetables.

Three caveats deserve to be stated plainly. The first concerns the Tenderloin and Mid-Market: the Tenderloin police district, the smallest in the city by area, still has the highest rates of homicide, robbery and assault, and drug use remains visible on the street by day as well as by night, particularly between Market Street and Turk Street. The overall figures have nevertheless improved: the city police recorded 28 homicides in 2025, the lowest level since 1954, a 25% fall in reported crime, a 43% fall in car break-ins and a 24% fall in robberies, while overdose deaths went from 635 in 2024 to 621 in 2025. In practice, walking at night between Civic Center and Union Square remains unpleasant rather than dangerous, and the price gap, often 80 to 150 USD a night compared with Union Square, is paid for in street scenes. The second caveat is the climate: July and August are the coolest and greyest months, with highs of 17 to 18 °C and a sea fog that may not lift all day over the western half of the city, while September and October are the clearest months. The third is financial: the city lodging tax stands at 14%, to which are added the tourism district assessment and that of the Moscone Expansion District, or about 16.5% on the final bill; on top of that come daily charges absent from the booking engines, 45 USD of amenity fee and 84 USD of valet parking at the San Francisco Proper, 65 USD of resort fee at Cavallo Point, to which the latter adds 4% in service charges and a 10% National Park Service fee.
