The place

Our account

Low buildings painted red, a brick chimney, agaves planted outside the doors: the Rancho Inn occupies the western entrance to Ojai, along Highway 33, about 1.1 kilometres from the centre according to Booking.com.

Rates start at 189 USD a night on the operator's booking engine, before 15% lodging tax. Reviews differ sharply: 8.7 out of 10 on Booking.com, 3.6 out of 5 on Tripadvisor, where noise comes up often.

A 1950 motel that its operators chose to repair rather than redo

The whole thing amounts to a few single-storey volumes, clad in red boards, lined up along 615 W Ojai Ave. The operator's website describes "1950s ranch architecture" and speaks of a "summer camp for adults". A brick chimney, a cactus and agave garden and a pool at the back complete the picture.

According to the Los Angeles Times article picked up by AOL in May 2022, the building dates from 1950 and Kenny Osehan took over the business at the end of 2012, after leaving the Presidio Motel in Santa Barbara; the works ran from 2012 to 2015 and the bar was added in 2014. The Ojai Hub site adds that the owner Steve Edelson granted her a twenty-year lease. None of the sources consulted attributes the building to an identified architect: we therefore name none. The "Makers" page of the official site does, however, credit the authors of the fit-out, including Eric Junker and Jess Rotter for the murals, Eric Trine for the stools and patio chairs, Heather Levine for the ceramic pendant lights and Nikki Tsukamoto for the dyed curtains.

The operator's website and the Shelter Social Club collective both give seventeen rooms; Tripadvisor gives eighteen, a contradiction we have not been able to settle. The official booking engine sets out four categories, all with king beds and all given for two people with no extra bed included: Standard King, King + Kitchenette, King + Jacuzzi Tub, and the Casita, the only self-contained unit, with a sitting room, gas fireplace, bathtub and a door opening directly onto the pool courtyard.

The pool, the sauna and a bar that also serves the local village

The official website lists, as shared facilities, a pool, a lawn, a fire pit, a patio, bikes loaned at no extra charge, a shop set up in the lobby by Eskina Space, an ice machine, coffee and tea in the morning. The photographs in the media library also show a hammock, picnic tables and a cornhole set.

The sauna is a point of divergence: the facilities list on the "Hotel" page of the official site does not mention it, whereas the description of the Casita in the operator's booking engine refers to "the pool and the sauna" with direct access, and Booking.com, Expedia and Trip.com all state it. There is no spa in the sense of a treatment centre; Tripadvisor reports massages offered on site.

No restaurant: the house has only the Chief's Peak Bar, open according to the official site Monday to Friday from 3pm to 10pm and at weekends from midday to 10pm, with a social hour Monday to Thursday from 3pm to 6pm, and a list of natural wines, beers and sake cocktails. Trip.com states that no breakfast is served. Charged on top, according to the official booking engine consulted on 11 August 2026: 50 USD per night per dog, two dogs maximum per room, and 25 USD for a folding bed or an air mattress. Parking, for its part, is free.

A stretch of road at the entrance to Ojai, a quarter of an hour on foot from the centre

The address sits at the western entrance to the town, coming in on Highway 33. The operator's website gives five minutes by bike or fifteen minutes on foot to the centre along the path that runs behind the property, the Ojai Valley Trail; Booking.com places the hotel 0.7 mile, about 1.1 kilometres, from the centre. The frontage faces Ojai Avenue, a busy road.

The guide published by the house points to addresses nearby: the open-air bookshop Bart's Books, the Topa Topa Brewery, the Libbey Bowl, the Sunday farmers' market, the Krishnamurti library and the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts. The walks start in the valley itself.

In recent news, the official site announced an Ojai Pride Pool Party at Chief's Peak on Sunday 28 June 2026, from 3pm to 8pm, half the takings from which were to go to the Queers in the Valley association. The Shelter Social Club collective, which runs the address, also states that it now manages two other houses in Ojai, the Capri Hotel, thirty rooms, and the Hummingbird Inn.

The Only Good Rooms verdict

What to take away

What we liked
  • The brick chimney and the agaves planted in front of the red timber cladding of the frontage.
  • The loan bikes, with their wooden "I love Ojai Rancho Inn" plate under the saddle.
  • The triangle-patterned counter at Chief's Peak, under the ceramic pendant lights.
  • The black "Ojai Rancho Inn" sign planted among the prickly pears.
What to watch out for

No resort fee appears in the official booking engine: the only scheduled extras are 50 USD per night per dog, two maximum per room, and 25 USD for an extra bed. The displayed rates, however, are before tax: the system applies an Ojai occupancy tax of 15% as well as a California tourism assessment, which takes a 189 USD night beyond 217 USD. Prices also vary by channel: for the night of 2 to 3 September 2026, the operator's engine showed 189 USD before tax while Hotels.com quoted 177 USD, or 204 USD including tax; we recorded both on 11 August 2026. One booking constraint to be aware of: the official site requires any Saturday night to be paired with the Friday or the Sunday, and more nights over public holidays. Sources contradict each other on the number of keys, seventeen according to the operator, eighteen according to Tripadvisor, and on the minimum age of the lead guest, 18 according to Trip.com, 21 according to Expedia. They differ above all on satisfaction: 8.7 out of 10 on Booking.com, whose review page reports 220 verified reviews, 8.8 out of 10 from 230 reviews on Expedia and Hotels.com, but 3.6 out of 5 from 196 reviews on Tripadvisor, which ranks the address seventh out of eleven in Ojai's guesthouses and inns category. The recurring complaints on Tripadvisor concern noise, from the bar and from Ojai Avenue, the dim lighting in the rooms and value for money. Finally, there is no restaurant and no breakfast served, only coffee and tea in the morning, and Tripadvisor mentions a recent restriction banning dogs from the pool area even though the property accepts them.

We have not stayed at this property. This entry is written from verified sources, including the operator's own website, rather than from a visit.
