The place

Our account

A white timber frame topped with a red turret, set on the sand at Coronado: the 1888 building can be seen from the beach as readily as from the bay. The operator's website states twenty-eight acres, about eleven hectares.

The bill adds up quickly: 50 USD of mandatory fees per night and 59 USD for parking, according to the operator's website. Kayak lists nights from 329 USD, Tripadvisor 598 to 1,276 USD for a standard room.

An 1888 timber building onto which far more recent wings were grafted over a century

According to the operator's website, the hotel opened on 19 February 1888, at a construction cost of 600,000 dollars plus 400,000 dollars of furnishings. The plans were the work of the Reid brothers, from Evansville, Indiana, and stayed close to the preparatory sketches for lack of time. The frame is Douglas fir, the cladding California redwood, and the thirty-three-foot ceiling of the Crown Room Oregon sugar pine. Wikipedia and Historic Hotels of America describe the whole as the second largest wooden structure in the United States. The National Historic Landmark listing dates from 1977, given as 5 May 1977 by Wikipedia.

The number of keys diverges between sources, and we found no official figure from the operator. Wikipedia states seven hundred and fifty-seven rooms. Historic Hotels of America counts six hundred and seventy-nine rooms plus seventy-eight beachfront cottages and villas, the same total. The Tripadvisor listing consulted shows nine hundred and thirty-eight rooms. Wikipedia assigns three hundred and sixty-seven rooms to the Victorian building alone, a figure the operator's website does not confirm.

The operator's website sorts the rooms into five neighbourhoods: The Victorian, the original 1888 building; The Views, contemporary rooms facing the ocean; The Cabanas, beside the pool; Beach Village, cottages and villas in a gated enclave; Shore House, residences opened in September 2022. The gap is real: a night in the listed Victorian building has nothing to do with a room in the modern towers, which Historic Hotels of America calls Ocean Towers and California Cabanas. The Victorian rooms reopened on 1 March 2025 after more than 160 million dollars of works, according to the operator's press release.

What the 50 dollars of mandatory fees cover, and everything they do not

The operator's website describes several pools: the main pool lined with cabanas, the Beach Village pools, the Shore House pool and one reserved for spa guests. The beach is directly accessible from the property; the loungers, parasols and cabanas at Del Beach are rented at extra cost, and Tripadvisor reviews quote 47 to 80 USD for beach chairs. The spa and the salon were rebuilt as part of the restoration, with ocean-view treatment rooms.

On the dining side, the operator's website lists Veranda, opened in April 2025, Nobu Del Coronado, opened in May 2025 with one hundred and fifty-six covers, one hundred and twenty of them outdoors, Serẽa, Sun Deck, ENO Market & Pizzeria, Beach & Taco Shack, the Babcock & Story Bar with its mahogany counter shipped from Philadelphia around Cape Horn in 1888, plus the Shore House bistro.

The extras are substantial and documented by the operator: 50 USD per room per night in mandatory fees, split into 35 USD of resort charge and 15 USD of Historic Preservation Fund; 59 USD per night per vehicle for self-parking, 79 USD for valet parking; taxes of 11.80%. Animals up to 18 kg are accepted, with a 150 USD cleaning fee per stay, 200 USD at Beach Village and Shore House.

A peninsula linked to San Diego by a bridge and a ferry, a quarter of an hour from the airport

Coronado is not an island but a peninsula attached to the mainland by a long sand spit, south of San Diego Bay. The hotel occupies the seafront on Orange Avenue, the town's shopping street, a few hundred metres from the village shops and restaurants. The North Island naval base is next door, which explains the regular military aircraft overhead.

The beach in front of the hotel is wide and public. Tripadvisor reviews report health advisories on water quality linked to the Tijuana River, further south, which can restrict swimming on some days: this is worth checking before you travel. The ocean is open, with surf.

Recent news is that of a six-year building site. On 18 June 2025 the operator announced the completion of a restoration of more than 550 million dollars carried out under Blackstone: the entrance porch returned to the open air after being enclosed since 1961, the lobby, the Victorian garden courtyard, the Crown Room, an 1888 mural rediscovered in the Ocean Ballroom, twenty-five stained glass windows restored or reproduced where only four survived, according to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In 2026, the operator's press page claims TIME's “World's Greatest Places” and Esquire's “Best New Hotels in the World” lists.

Option nautique

The Only Good Rooms verdict

What to take away

What we liked
  • The conical red-roofed turret, visible from the beach and from aircraft on approach.
  • The timber porch returned to the open air in 2022 after fifty years enclosed, and its white rocking chairs.
  • The thirty-three-foot ceiling of the Crown Room, in Oregon sugar pine laid without nails according to Historic Hotels of America.
  • The Victorian garden courtyard replanted with citrus following the 1888 planting, with the bronze copy of the Naiad Queen fountain.
What to watch out for

This is a very large property: between 679 and 938 rooms depending on the source, five distinct neighbourhoods, twenty-eight acres, conferences in a 15,130 square foot event centre and day visitors in the shops. Mandatory fees come to 50 USD per room per night, that is 35 USD of resort charge plus 15 USD of Historic Preservation Fund, to which are added 59 USD for self-parking or 79 USD for valet parking, and 11.80% in taxes: allow at least 109 USD a night before the room itself if you arrive by car. The gap between the neighbourhoods is marked, and a room in the modern wings has little of the listed 1888 building about it: check which neighbourhood you are booking, not only the view advertised. The Tripadvisor reviews consulted report queues at breakfast and a sense of overcrowding in high season; the page consulted shows 4.1 out of 5 and ranks the hotel eleventh out of seventeen in Coronado, from 301 reviews displayed. The sources contradict one another on several points, and we flag it: the cost of the works is given as 400 million dollars for the master plan completed in September 2022 by CoStar and The Coronado News, as more than 550 million by the operator's June 2025 press release, and as 600 million by the trade site ALHI; the filming of Some Like It Hot is dated 1958 by the operator's website and the film 1959 by Wikipedia and The Coronado News, shooting having taken place in 1958 for a 1959 release; rates run from 329 USD on Kayak to 598-1,276 USD on Tripadvisor; finally the Booking rating is reported as 8.3 out of 10 from 830 reviews by the aggregator Kayak, while Booking's own review page states 334 verified reviews, and we were unable to read the rating directly on Booking.

We have not stayed at this property. This entry is written from verified sources, including the operator's own website, rather than from a visit.

Getting there

The operator's website states “15 minutes' drive” from San Diego International Airport; Historic Hotels of America gives 9 miles, about 14.5 km. The route crosses the Coronado bridge from Interstate 5, exit 14A, then follows Orange Avenue for about 3 km. At peak times and on event days, allow more: travellers' accounts mention 20 to 30 minutes.

The Flagship ferry links central San Diego to the Coronado Ferry Landing in 15 minutes, from 9 USD one way, every 60 minutes from Broadway Pier and every 30 minutes from the Convention Center; from the landing to the hotel, allow about 30 minutes on foot according to the LaJollaMom blog. On site, the operator charges 59 USD per night per vehicle for self-parking and 79 USD for valet parking, with a height limit of 2.18 m in the garage; during the day, 39 USD for the first two hours self-park, 100 USD maximum per day.
