The place

Our account

A winding road climbs up from Sunset Boulevard, then a stone bridge crosses a lake where swans swim. Behind the pink walls, 103 rooms and suites are scattered across twelve acres of gardens, close to five hectares.

The rate follows: from 1,050 USD a night according to Kayak, valet parking at 70 USD a day, a municipal tax of 14%. On Tripadvisor, 4.7 out of 5 from 890 reviews, with recurring comments about uneven service at busy times.

A property developer’s office turned hotel in 1946, never rebuilt since

The land belonged to Alphonzo Bell, the man who subdivided the Bel Air neighbourhood. According to Wikipedia, the buildings date from 1922 and served as offices and stables on a sixty-acre estate. The “About” page on the operator’s website states that the Texan Joseph Drown bought 18 acres in early 1946 and opened the hotel on 24 August of the same year. The travel site Trip.com, for its part, indicates “opened in 1921”, which contradicts the two previous sources.

The architect of the conversion is Burton Schutt, Drown’s associate, who gave the whole its low mission-style volumes, its pale pink rendered walls and its tiled roofs. The operator’s website credits a restoration in the 1970s to the Cuban architect Manuel S. Alvarez. The heaviest works are the most recent: Alexandra Champalimaud for the rooms, the Rockwell Group for the public areas. Wikipedia mentions a two-year closure and a reopening in October 2011, while the “About” page on the official website dates the works from 2008 to 2010; we have found no source that settles the matter.

The hotel has 103 rooms and suites, forty-five of them suites, a figure consistent across Wikipedia, Tripadvisor, Expedia and the operator’s website. Trip.com displays “210 rooms” while, on the same page, listing fifty-eight rooms and forty-five suites, that is 103: the error is internal to that entry. Some twenty categories are marketed, from the 40 m² Superior Room to the 210 m² Presidential Suite with its private infinity pool, by way of the 124 m² two-bedroom Chalon Suite and the Grace Kelly Suite with its terrace pool. The operator publishes the maximum occupancy of no category.

A spa with seven treatment rooms, a restaurant without a star chef and valet parking at 70 dollars

The public areas come down to a handful of places: a swan lake lined with willows, a heated outdoor pool open all year, a bar-lounge and brick paths between banana plants and bougainvillea. The operator’s website states 483 specimen trees and more than 4,000 plants across the twelve acres. The Living Room and the Pâtisserie reopened on 16 August 2024 after a refurbishment by Champalimaud Design, with an outdoor courtyard and a wood-burning fireplace, according to CPP-Luxury.

The spa has seven treatment rooms plus a private enclave, separate men’s and women’s hammams, a nail area and the Salon by Joseph, according to the dedicated page on the official website. Facial protocols use the Swiss brand Valmont. Stated opening hours: 9am to 7pm every day, with the gym accessible 24 hours a day to hotel guests. Pool access for spa members is limited to weekdays.

As for the restaurant, Wolfgang Puck left the property on 31 March 2023 after eleven years, according to Los Angeles Magazine, which cites a “mutual” decision and a dining room of one hundred and seventy covers. The cooking remains Californian with Mediterranean influences, under the direction of Joe Garcia since the 2024 overhaul. Charged separately: valet parking at 70 USD a day, à la carte breakfast between 25 and 65 USD per person according to Travelocity, the extra bed at 35 USD a day, dogs at 150 USD per stay, and airport transfers except in the most expensive suites, where the operator’s website states they are included.

A residential canyon with no shops, twenty minutes from Rodeo Drive

Stone Canyon Road is a residential street in Bel Air, a neighbourhood without shops or continuous pavements, closed off by entrance gates from Sunset Boulevard. The hotel occupies the far end of the canyon, which explains the quiet noted by most sources, but also the complete absence of neighbourhood life: nothing can be done on foot from reception, other than a walk in the gardens.

The useful landmarks are close in distance and slow in real time: the Getty Center at 7.4 km, Rodeo Drive at 5.8 km according to an OpenStreetMap route calculation, UCLA and Westwood a few minutes further. Booking.com places the hotel 3.6 miles from North Rodeo Drive and 11.8 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Measurements diverge between platforms, none of them taking account of traffic on Sunset Boulevard at peak times.

Two recent developments. The MICHELIN Guide awarded it three MICHELIN Keys on 16 October 2025: according to the Dorchester Collection press release, the hotel is among sixteen American properties so distinguished and one of the two in Los Angeles, with the Beverly Hills Hotel. Separately, Los Angeles voters rejected Measure TT on 2 June 2026, which would have raised the municipal lodging tax from 14% to 16%: the rate stays at 14%. The hotel marks its eightieth anniversary on 24 August 2026.

Option nautique

The Only Good Rooms verdict

What to take away

What we liked
  • The swans on the lake you drive alongside on arrival, before even reaching reception.
  • The pale pink rendered walls under the palm trees, the property’s visual signature since 1946.
  • The restaurant terrace under its stretched canopy, framed by the arcades and the bougainvillea.
  • The private pools of some suites, including the infinity pool of the Presidential Suite.
What to watch out for

No source consulted mentions a resort fee or a destination fee, which is rare in Los Angeles, but the bill climbs elsewhere: compulsory valet parking at 70 USD a day, breakfast from 25 to 65 USD per person, a municipal lodging tax of 14% maintained after Measure TT was rejected on 2 June 2026. Entry-level rates diverge sharply from one platform to another: 994 USD on Momondo, 1,050 USD on Kayak, about 1,200 USD according to Hotels Above Par, and a range of 1,288 to 2,011 USD on Tripadvisor for a standard room excluding taxes; one affiliate site even quotes 693 USD, a figure we were unable to corroborate anywhere. Guest ratings do not agree either: 9.2 on Booking.com, which does not publicly display the number of reviews, 9.8 from 436 reviews on Expedia, 4.7 out of 5 from 890 reviews on Tripadvisor, where the hotel ranks only twentieth out of 377 properties in Los Angeles. Recurring criticism concerns rooms allocated far from reception and on upper floors without a lift, lapses in housekeeping, and service that slips when a wedding takes over part of the estate. The operator’s website contradicts itself on dogs: the hotel’s home page states two dogs under 7 kg, the FAQ on the same site mentions a maximum of 20 kg, in both cases for 150 USD per stay. A dress code applies in the dining areas, excluding caps, ripped jeans, sportswear and trainers. Finally, the maximum occupancy per room category is published nowhere by the operator: to be checked at the time of booking if you are travelling as more than two.

We have not stayed at this property. This entry is written from verified sources, including the operator's own website, rather than from a visit.

Getting there

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the logical point of entry. An OpenStreetMap road route calculation gives 20.4 km and 24 minutes outside traffic via the I-405; Trip.com states 21.5 km and 25 minutes, which is consistent. Travelocity, on the other hand, indicates “about 26 miles” and 60 minutes, an isolated figure that we do not retain for the distance, even if an hour’s journey remains realistic at peak times. Burbank Airport (BUR) is given as 26.3 miles by the same source. Private transfers are arranged by the concierge at the guest’s expense, except for the suites, where the operator’s website states they are included, by return sedan.

Public transport is not a practicable option: no line serves the canyon, and the nearest stop is on Sunset Boulevard, 1.7 km below by a road without continuous pavement, some twenty minutes’ walk uphill on the way back. A car is in effect compulsory. Valet parking is charged at 70 USD a day according to the FAQ on the operator’s website and Travelocity, with unlimited in-and-out access; there is no self-parking.
